The Christmas Tree

The very first Christmas tree arrived in England in 1841. In fact, Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, brought this tradition to England in the above mentioned year.

Nowadays, everybody has got one and it’s a custom to decorate it on Christmas Eve and take it down on the Twelfth Night, January 5th.

Every year, in Trafalgar Square is put an enormous Christmas Tree.

December 26th is called Boxing Day in Great Britain, probably because it was the day on which the rich people gave their servants some presents. These presents were put in boxes and this was the reason why the 26th December is today remembered as Boxing Day.

In Scotland December 31th is called Hogmanay. During this special day people pay visits to their friends. Traditionally the first visitor to the house of a friend has to take a piece of coal, the so called: “first footing”. It was believed that the “first footing” bring good luck!
